From Scotland to America: golf crosses the ocean Golf arrived in the United States in the 19th century, brought over by Scottish and English-speaking emigrants. In 1888, in Yonkers (New York), John Reid founded the first permanent American golf club: The Saint Andrew's Golf Club, which is still active today. In 1894, the USGA (United States Golf Association) was founded to regulate and promote the game at a national level. The following year, in 1895, the first U.S. Open and the first U.S. Amateur Championship were organised, marking the beginning of the great American golfing tradition. In the 20th century, legendary figures such as Francis Ouimet, Bobby Jones and Arnold Palmer transformed golf from an elite sport into a national passion.
